Microsoft MVP program has been there for more than 30 years. It’s a program introduced by Bill Gates. However, this program is becoming not only old but also corrupted.

I’ve been tracking this program for about 4 years. I found that a few MVPs wrote posts and showed concerns about this program.

Why did I start investigating the MVP program 4 years ago?

I was an MVP of the Developer technology category during 2014-2017. However, I resigned from the MVP title in early 2017 because I found that I was complained about by a few Microsoft China groups through the China MVP program. The reason is that I was investigating a few critical bugs of the Azure Mooncake Registration process happened in China.

These critical bugs were finally confirmed by Scott Gu (GM of Azure) and then he informed the China team to investigate why it happened and no one took care of this before I investigated these bugs. However, what I received from the China MSFT team is not thanks but complaints. I guess I somewhat destroyed their great plan of cheating MSFT US HQ. Their rule looks to be I don’t do it, you cannot do it either. No matter whether you are volunteered or not.

After I resigned from the MVP title, I received a weird CoC from the MVP lead in China Christina Liang. She didn’t explain to me why the CoC exists until now. I did try to contact her but she never replied. I have been ignored by her for a few years.

Furthermore, she started spreading a rumor about me a few years ago. According to her rumor, I was fired by the MVP program instead of resigning by myself. However, even a few FTEs believe in her rumor about me. They keep warning other FTEs about my badness and evilness while planning some China community events.

I know this because one of my best friends in MSFT China was also warned by the current PM of Reactor China Cynthia Xin. She expressed directly to my friend that Tony Qu was fired by the Microsoft MVP program and he has been destroying the .NET China community for a few years, which is fake news. I believe it’s NOT the first time Cynthia has told my rumors to others. Someone inside MSFT must spread rumors about me and let Cynthia know it because I don’t know Cynthia and we don’t have anything in common in the community.

Due to their revenge on me in the past few years, I kicked off the full investigation of the abuse of the Microsoft MVP program.

CoC is abused by managers of the MVP program

I collected a few cases of abuse of CoC from the MVP program. They are real and valid cases.

In Apr. 2017, Tony Qu got a CoC due to his complaint to US HQ about the Azure Mooncake registration issue (the 1-yuan trial process can fail in most cases). Tony Qu is a famous OSS developer. He is the maintainer of NPOI.

In Mar. 2023, Greg Deckler got a CoC due to his complaint to the PowerBI team. He was pushing the PowerBI team to fix the Measure Total calculation bug. He has been a Microsoft MVP for 7 years. He is famous and he published a few books about PowerBI. [3]

Someone who did break the CoC doesn’t get a CoC warning

All the following cases broke MVP CoC but they never got a CoC warning in any case.

  1. Frank Xu Lei (an ex-MVP) faked himself as an MSFT staff of Microsoft Research in China. But MVP Lead ignored it.

2. Xu Yang, who got Microsoft MVP in 2020, faked his MVP title during 2016–2018. The weird thing is that MVP Lead Christina Liang even accepts the excuse that Xu Yang is forced by his ex-boss without suspicion. Xu Yang is one of the bosses in the training company named Ruanmou. He is not an employee at all. He owns 30% of the company shares. Faking MVP definitely can help him sell the training well. [1]

3. Jeffery Su, a current regional director, even bribes his staff with an MVP award. I know this because one of his ex-staff came to me and complained a lot about him. This attracts my attention to this guy. And I did dive deep into this case.

4. James Yeung, who has been an MVP for a few years, cyberbullied me in Nov 2020. He said to one of my colleagues in wechat moments that he didn’t wanna work in iHerb because Tony Qu was there. He even works with an internal staff of iHerb to monitor me inside the office. I knew this because one of my colleagues in a neighborhood team came to me someday and said ‘Hey Tony, why do these guys (in a QQ group) say I’m your spy in the group?’ This did surprise me.

5. Amit R S Bansal was discrminated by someone in the community. But MVP Lead Rie Merrit ignores this anti-CoC behavior. [4]

Summary

It’s time for MSFT to consider closing this abused program although it's a pity that MVP program used to be the proud of MSFT. There are a few excellent experts who get MVPs all the time.
