How many availability zones are MSFT going to create in Malaysia?
I dive deeply into the MSFT data centers in Johor Bahru these days. I found that MSFT had bought a dozen data centers.
Then you may ask how many availability zones MSFT will create in Malaysia. That’s a good question!
MSFT Plan for Malaysia Data Centers
What if MSFT plans to make Malaysia the data center hub of the whole APAC (not just the ASEAN region, ASEAN = Asia South East region).
According to the US AI Act, MSFT can no longer put any AI infrastructure in mainland China.
I guess it will shrink the GCR region before 2027 and then expand the ASEAN region.
Are 3 availability zones enough?
Usually, an Azure region has at most 3 AZ. However, if all the above assumptions are correct, Azure Malaysia may have at least 6 AZs.
3 AZs may be located in Kuala Lumpur to support GCR region overseas clients since Kuala Lumpur is 320km closer to China than Singapore. The rest AZs will be located in Johor Bahru to support clients in Southeast Asia countries.
