I’ve been tracking MSFT for years. There are some critical decision changes in recent MSFT announcements for Southeast Asia. Something will happen soon in Malaysia and APAC region.
Investments Announced in Southeast Asia
- In 2024, it announced 2.2 billion USD expansion investment in Malaysia in the next 5 years (2025–2030) for Cloud and AI infrastructure
- In 2021, it announced 1 billion USD investment in Malaysia over 5 years (2021–2025)
- In 2024, it announced 1.7 billion USD investment in Indonesia
- In 2024, it announced a new data center construction plan in Thailand. But no exact number.
In total, 3.2 billion USD was invested in Malaysia from 2021 to 2030
Why MSFT decides to invest Southeast Asia instead in 2024
In Microsoft, there are two big groups in APAC, one is called Asia, and the other is called ASEAN (South East Asia group). Mainland China reports to the Asia group, and Malaysia reports to the ASEAN group.
The original plan of MSFT was to make China mainland the Asia cloud hub. However, the Chinese government didn’t show kindness to Microsoft in the past 5 years and created Document 79 to remove American technology including Microsoft technology.
