I’ve been tracking MVP program for a few years. The reason is simple — I’m an ex-MVP who is not satisified with the MVP program. Many details of this program can be improved.

And I wanna know if it’s improved in recent years. However, the answer I got is no. Moreover, I’m monitoring the MVP managers in Linkedin. I did notice some weird things last year while evaulating the KPI of MVP program.

Here is what I found.

  • Canada MVP program PM was fired/left in 2018
  • Taiwan MVP program PM was fired/left in 2018
  • Korea MVP program PM transfered to Azure team, but still sharing the cost with MVP team, this happened in 2021
  • Director of MVP and Regional Director program left Microsoft in 2022

And the MVP reconnect program was cancelled in May, 2023.

Moreover, MVP number declined from 4000+ to 3300+ compared with the number in 2016. MVP program China used to have 250+ MVPs. But it only has 136 MVPs — almost 50% reduce.

Conclusion

The MVP program is cutting cost year by year. According to this trend, MVP program may be cancelled in 2–3 years. Especially when Azure stop increasing and Microsoft start cutting headcounts. Then MVP program will be top in the list of cutting cost

Suggestion

.NET MVP should look for a new program like .NET Foundation to join.

AI MVP should look for some other AI program outside Microsoft.

Office MVP, frankly speaking, I don’t have any suggestion.
